Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on 14 separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

However, Marseille struck twice late to take a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen seasons.
