EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
