Comeback Daniil Medvedev Claims First Championship in 882 Days
19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been won on hard surfaces
A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden trophy for over two years with a win over opponent Moutet in the competition championship match.
Medvedev, a former world number one, has experienced a challenging season, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and undergoing a setback at the US Open.
The player's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serving in particular - led to him falling of the top ten and finally separating with former mentor Cervara.
Currently training with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has gradually advanced in the recent weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought three-set triumph over opponent Corentin Moutet.
It is his first trophy since the Rome competition and first on a hard surface from that period of the previous year.
The win also means he has secured twenty-one victories at 21 various tournaments.
"It's the first time I'm at a tournament with my two daughters at once, so to get a trophy is particularly special," stated tennis professional Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six finals, including in the German tournament in the past months.
Medvedev's counter-punching play style and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had caused observers to question if his skill to play at the highest level was finished.
But the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, attempting to advance forward and play aggressively, backed up by an improved serving game.
The champion fought back from a break down in the opening set against the difficult Frenchman, taking 4 of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.
The pair swapped service breaks in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his initial tour championship, took control to force a decider.
Moutet defended four early break points in a competitive deciding set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to secure the win.
Appropriately, he clinched the win with a point at the net, with his opponent unable to manage a return after over two and a half hours.
