Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio
The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.
Matteo's Unforeseen Return
A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.
He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
